We’re big fans of helping our bodies feel better naturally! To that end, I make my own Elderberry syrup which everyone takes daily (1-2 tsps) during the fall/winter months. It’s an easy way to boost immunity and help fight off viral illnesses. If my kids start going downhill, I increase the frequency to 2-3 times daily. If you aren’t doing this, and you or your kids struggle with staying well, this could be super helpful for your family! And, it’s so much cheaper to make at home than to purchase in stores. Here’s a run down of some of the ingredients I use in my syrup.
Organic Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra): “Used for its antioxidant activity to lower cholesterol, improve vision, boost the immune system, improve heart health and for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections and tonsillitis.” –Herbwisdom.com. I like to get mine off Amazon or Mountain Rose Herbs.
Organic Star anise: The most important ingredient used to make Tamiflu, the antiviral prescription drug. 90% of the world’s Star Anise is from China. Yes, the main ingredient in the most common antiviral prescription drug is derived from an HERB!
Organic Whole clove buds: antibacterial, immune boosting by increasing white blood cells counts, aids in digestion, protects liver against infections, anti-mutagenic properties, anti-inflammatory, helps gingivitis and gum disease. .
Organic cinnamon sticks: blood sugar and cholesterol reduction, antibacterial and antifungal, and antiviral, among many other health benefits. .
Fresh ginger root: well known for its use as a remedy for cold, flu, digestion, nausea, cramping.
Raw organic honey: antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, digestive support.
Directions: Combine 1 cup of elderberries, 3-5 Star Anise, 8-10 whole clove buds, 4-5 cinnamon sticks and fresh ginger slices into a large pot. Cover with 7-8 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer on low for 1 hour – with the lid on, or just barely cracked. Let cool for 1 hour. Once cooled, remove all solids from the syrup using a strainer or cheese cloth, and throw away the pulp. I like to stir in 2 cups of organic raw honey. I also like to add in 1-2 drops of doTERRA Lemon and onGuard essential oils after the honey has been stirred in, for added detoxing and immune boosting. I keep 1 quart in the refrigerator (good for up to 1-2 months) and I freeze the rest in large mason jars. When I’m getting low on my current jar, I simply defrost the new jar of syrup in the fridge and it’s ready to go. Please note: children under 1 should not ingest this syrup as it contains raw honey.
Who else loves their elderberry syrup!
